Rack And Pinion Air Torque Actuators

Available in both Spring return & double acting units (18 in total) the Air Torque actuator rack and pinion unit can achieve torque output figures reaching 10,000 Nm and in doing so, overpowering almost any other pneumatic actuator in its class.

The extruded aluminium body of the Air Torque Actuator comes as standard with internal and external corrosion protective coatings to ensure maximum life expectancy from the units. The Dual Piston Rack & Pinion Design forms part of the compact, robust and symmetrical mounting position. The reverse operation of the actuator can be achieved without unnecessary and time-consuming returns to the manufacturer in field simply by inverting the pistons.

Modular, spring-loaded cartridge designs for fail-safe actuators offer a coated spring protection providing a greater level of corrosive resistance and end of line safety. High and low-temperature versions allow the Air Torque Actuator to excel in even the harshest of environments with Stainless Steel & Epoxy Coated options completing the range. Non-standard 120, 135 & 180 Degree options, again in both spring return and double acting are available for applications that require this particular setup.

In-field, technical expertise & experience for product development has led to the Airtorque actuator securing a list of International Patents & Quality Approvals which include Atex 94/9EC, SIL3 IEC 61508 & ISO 9001-2000.

Also incorporating a universal Anti-Blowout drive shaft it is not hard to see why the Air Torque actuator is the preferred choice to some leading, global manufacturers including the likes of Unilever, Shell & Castrol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Air Torque actuators work on the principle of utilising compressed air to create a torque or rotational force. This force is then transmitted to a valve stem, which causes the valve to open or close.

Some advantages of Air Torque actuators include:

  • Quick and precise valve control.
  • Suitable for environments where electric power sources are not feasible.
  • High reliability in harsh conditions.
  • Easy maintenance and installation.

Air Torque actuators are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, water treatment, power generation, and more. They are ideal for applications where pneumatic control is preferred or required.

Yes, Air Torque actuators can often be customized to meet specific requirements. This may include variations in torque output, mounting options, materials, and other features.

Regular maintenance may involve tasks like inspecting seals, lubricating moving parts, checking for air leaks, and replacing worn components. Always refer to the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines.

Yes, Air Torque actuators are designed to be compatible with a wide range of valve types, including ball valves, butterfly valves, plug valves, and more.
Yes, Air Torque actuators can be integrated into larger control systems, including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and distributed control systems, to automate valve operations as part of a broader process.
The main components of an Air Torque actuator typically include a piston, rack and pinion mechanism, seals, bearings, and housing. These work together to convert pneumatic energy into rotational motion.
Yes, Air Torque actuators are designed to operate in high-pressure environments. They are often used in applications where precise valve control is required even under high pressures.
Yes, many Air Torque actuators offer fail-safe options like spring-return or double-acting configurations. These ensure that the valve returns to a predetermined position in case of air supply failure.
The lifespan of an Air Torque actuator can vary depending on factors such as operating conditions, maintenance practices, and the specific model. With proper maintenance, they can last for many years.
A16: Yes, in many cases, Air Torque actuators can be retrofitted onto existing valves, provided they are compatible in terms of size, type, and mounting configuration. This can be a cost-effective way to upgrade control systems without replacing the entire valve assembly.

Scotch Yoke Air Torque Pneumatic Actuators:

Scotch Yoke Air Torque Actuators are designed to operate in the harshest, most demanding industrial applications and environments where functionality and reliability are required throughout the complete cycle of valve automation. Predominantly used for larger sized Ball & Butterfly Valves the Scotch Yoke Actuator offers 90° quarter turn, on-off operation by converting linear movement to rotary action through the internal driving cylinder and scotch yoke mechanism with high start and end torque output up to 60,000NM.  This, in turn, transmits power continuously and precisely to perform the operation of the Ball or Butterfly Vale. The ATHD Air Torque Scotch Yoke Actuator is a compact, lightweight and economical unit bringing reliability and low maintenance to industries where it is needed most and offering long, uninterrupted service. Available in both Spring Return & Double Acting units setup can be arranged in either the fail-safe open or closed positions, returning the actuator and valve position to the required safety location in the event of a power failure.
